Create a Multilingual Site

Once you've downloaded the WordPress files, log in to your WordPress site, go to Plugins > Add New, and upload the zip file you got from CodeCanyon. After uploading, click Install Now, wait a few seconds, and then click Activate. You can now start using the plugin.
Configurations
After activation, the plugin should appear as a sidebar menu as Auto Translation option in the admin area of your WordPress site. Go to Auto Translation > Dashboard, click on Settings, and enter the purchase code.

Polylang multilingual WordPress plugin allows you to convert your website into a multi-language WordPress site. This will allow you to reach a wider audience with your content. You will have to the translations yourself or you can hirer translators that integrate directly with the plugin.
First things first, let’s install the plugin.
To install this plugin please log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Plugins and then click on Add New.
On the next page type “Polylang” into the search bar. The plugin we want should be the first one in the top left. The image looks like a parrot’s head facing to the right.
Click on the Install Now button and then click Activate after it’s installed.
There are a lot of add-ons for the Polylang plugin. I encourage you to check those out if you need additional multi-language functionality.
This plugin allows you to add languages to your site in the plugin settings. By adding a language, it adds functionality to translate any post to that language and adds that language to the sidebar widget.
To add languages click on Languages in the lefthand admin menu. On the next page is a simple form that will allow you to add more languages.
Add as any as you want.
But keep in mind the plugin does not automatically translate your content. All translations are manual.
Now that you’ve added languages click on Posts or Pages in the left side admin menu to those lists.
You will see new columns with the country flags of the languages you chose in the header row.
In each post or page row you will see either a check mark, a plus sign or a pencil under any given specific country flag.
The check mark means that the post in that row is in that language.
The pencil means a translation in that language exists and you click on the pencil to edit it.
The plus sign means that a translation does not yet exist in that language. You can click the plus sign to create a version for that language.
It’s important to keep in mind that when a post is translated into all the languages you chose, there will be a separate post for each language.
For example, if you have 3 different languages set for your site, if you translate a post into all of those languages you will 3 different posts. One for each language.
Once you have some posts translated you’ll want to add the sidebar widget to your site so that people can switch between languages.
Go to Appearance, then Widgets. In the Available Widgets section there will be one called Language Switcher. Drag it to your sidebar and then customize it.
Once you’re done, go to a blog post on your site and switch languages using the switcher to see how it works. It’s pretty cool.
By default, the plugin will detect the visitor’s browser’s language and pick that language on your site if it exists. You can change that behavior if you go to Languages, then Settings.
There is more to the Polylang plugin but this will get you started on the right foot.

Why You Need a Multilingual Digital Marketing Strategy Now
Are you neglecting website translation? Find out why a multilingual digital marketing strategy is imperative to the success of your campaigns.

In the post covid-19 “new normal”, more and more people are turning to the internet for work, for play and even for shopping. A multilingual digital marketing campaign is imperative no matter what your niche may be.
Why?
Increased visibility, increased influence and a whole lot less competition. How do you set up a multilingual digital marketing campaign? What do you need to learn to build a successful multilingual digital marketing strategy?
The best place to start is with research. There are approximately 7000 languages in the world, and since it would probably not be cost effective to use website translations for that many languages, start by determining which languages are necessary for translation. The translation company should focus on localization services in addition to the website and document translation that will be necessary. The localization strategy is important for the translation as the parent language will be different around the world, even among native speakers. It may also be possible to use someone from the local areas to do the website translation, but that depends on the efficacy of their broader knowledge of the language pairs.
English has long been the dominant language of the internet. Despite this, only 20 percent of the people in the world speak English, and only 5 percent of the global population has English as their native language. 98 percent of all of the content on the internet is written in only twelve languages, with more than 50 percent of the website content being written in English. 2020 will be a landmark year according to the BBC online. It is also forecast that this is the year that less than 50 percent of the content online will be in English for the first time in history.
The short takeaway from this is that a website translation into any language other than English automatically circumvents competition from more than 50 percent of the content on the internet today. How much less competition will you have in those translations within your personal niche? Mind you, this will only work with an actual website translation and not just using some CMS translation plugin that creates a quick and easy fix. Why?
Why Website Translation and not Translation Plugins – Website Translation and SEO
Machine translation has vastly improved since its early days. Given the propensity for using content management systems like WordPress and Joomla for website design, there are also many translation apps and plugins built specifically for the individual CMS websites.
Some of these plugins are pretty good at machine translation, though still benefit by human intervention and post edited machine translations. Some of these plugins also charge monthly fees for this benefit, but it could be worth it if you are updating all of the content on your website daily.
There does however, seem to be one major detriment from virtually all of the translation plugins, and that is in how they handle SEO. The ability for visitors to click a button and see the website in a different language is a good option, but the plugins do not create translations that can be indexed by the search engine.
A proper website translation will be fully indexed by the search engines, increasing the visibility of the website in the targeted languages. Even the best website translation plugins are further lacking in the ability to implement localization strategies.
Website Translation and Localization Strategies
One of the current limitations with machine translation, is the restriction to little more than a literal translation of the words written. While that may sound good in theory, the reality is that translation is much more nuanced and specific.
There are many localized expressions that cannot be literally translated, or that would risk changing the entire context of the message if they were translated verbatim. There are even generational differences within the same language that can change the entire meaning of a translation. Back in the sixties something may have been “far out” or in the seventies, “cool dude”.
What would happen however, if something were “like totally tubular”? In the United States, “Nobody bakes like Sara Lee” and this is a brand name for pre-made, processed, baked goods. In the Philippines however, Sara Lee is not known for her baking skills, but as a direct competitor to both Avon and Tupperware.
It is often unknown tidbits like this, or other seemingly “trivial” facts that make localization services so important to the overall website translation and the end user experience. A proper website translation using localization services can provide something much better, translating the actual content and context of the conversation into a more localized variation.
These principles of localization strategies move far beyond just language and translation though. What if all of the photographs on the website translation were localized? Now instead of seeing foreigners running around, the visitors see people just like themselves? Any specific mentions of geographical locations can be related to similar areas in the targeted markets.
No matter who the target demographic may be, every successful marketing campaign has one common fact. It is important to establish a personal, emotional relationship with the target demographic in order to gain their trust. This is especially true if you are marketing solutions to their problems.
Showing the target audience that you know and understand their culture, their beliefs and their problems, makes it more likely they will believe that you can offer them meaningful solutions to those problems. It does not matter if you are generating leads or getting people to click the all-important “buy now” button, the direct connection with the target demographic always makes it easier.
Website Translation and Multilingual Website Design
There are two very important words to remember when designing for a website translation.
Brand consistency.
The reason that so many chain stores and franchises do so well is that people know and understand that no matter where they go, the products are going to be the same and the quality will be the same.
These same considerations are sometimes overlooked even by webmasters who have fully translated their website into two or more languages. If you have been smart, you have localized all of your content as well. But have you kept everything consistent? Will the person reading your site in Arabic and reading it in English be able to have the same user experience?
The availability of the website translations should be kept “above the board” or “above the fold” making it visible and obvious the moment someone lands on any page on your website. One of the favored methods for accomplishing this is through the use of national flags where the flag and the associated language translation will be readily identifiable.
Pictures should be the same size and in the same positions relative to the website template when implementing localization strategies. Since different translations will use up different amounts of space, this may take a little time, and even some fiddling with website fonts and spacing. The same is true for any advertisements that may be included in the website as well.
Going back to the example in Arabic, one of the more complex issues of website translations occurs in cases where the languages are written from right to left rather than left to right. In such cases, it is ideal for the website template design to be reversed in order to maintain brand consistency.
The website advertising placement, the photographs and any other modules or frames should be proportionate but inverse or the reverse of their normal positions. The sizes of the pictures and ads, and even the text locations should remain consistent, though the content placement should be completely reversed.
This active effort to retain brand consistency can also help to increase customer retention and improve customer loyalty. One of the key points in any successful digital marketing campaign is the ability to not only get new customers, but to retain them as customers at the same time.  
Website Translation and Multi-Purposing Content
Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of website translation is that it provides you with all of the tools you need to begin multi-purposing all of your website marketing content. For those that do not know, multi-purposing website content is using the same content as the basis for different media formats.
An article can be the basis for a podcast, a slideshow or even a video when mixed with infographics or other information. These additional materials, when properly formatted, linked and used as an integral part of the overall content marketing strategy, can greatly increase visibility and organic traffic.
This tactic is equally important as part of a multilingual marketing campaign as it is for the domestic or native language campaign of the international marketer. A complete website translation also provides you with everything you need, having translations from all of the existing content.
From here, you may want to use a native speaker to provide voice-overs for podcasts or videos, though video marketing content tends to do equally as well with native language closed captioning. There should be a sufficient amount of information to either create new infographics or to provide translation of the infographics in use to make slide shows.
In short, everything you need should be in place to multi-purpose all of your content in as many languages as you have selected for your website translation, all completed in a single effort. It should be noted however, that there are going to be at least some benefits from using a professional translation company for the website translation.
A translation company that specializes in localization services will be intimately familiar with the local language pairs, ensuring that your localization strategies can be implemented more fully and effectively. The translation work is generally guaranteed to some degree, and there is only a single expenditure for all of the website content.
The only thing that remains is making sure that your marketing efforts are equally opportune to attract your new target markets.
The Importance of Multilingual Social Marketing
The Facebook user interface is currently supported in 111 languages. Twitter is supported in 35 languages. Mind you, these are just the user interfaces. Reuters found that there are 31 additional languages used on Facebook above the supported languages.
What that means is that there is an audience for somewhere around 143 languages on Facebook, and likely an equally large number of under-represented languages on other social media sites. The global average internet use of “netizens” is almost 6 hours and 43 minutes every day.
Using a website translation and not actively pursuing organic traffic outside of the search engines is not only going to leave money on the table, but it is also going to leave doors open for your digital marketing competition to pass you by and attract your audience to their site.
Video marketing content can be both expensive and challenging to create for some marketers. Fortunately, there is a simpler workaround for video marketing strategies, again using the materials that were provided by the website translation.

A recent report published in the Guardian in July of 2019 pointed out some very relevant statistics about video marketing. Most of their focus was on subtitles, though closed captioning is a much better option as will be explained shortly in this article.
85 percent of all Facebook videos are viewed without sound. More than half of all people watching videos on mobile devices do so with the sound off. And while the focus here was on subtitles and their increase in views, closed captioning offers a much more viable solution. Once again, the main reason being SEO and the visibility of the marketing materials.
Subtitles are hard coded into the video and can be distracting. They are also generally limited to just the text of the conversation, and do not fully convey the meaning of any subtle nuances the video may contain. Furthermore, being hard coded into the video, subtitles are challenging to translate. Why?
Imagine trying to read closed captioning in a foreign language over top of the subtitles that are already present in another language. Now there are also two sets of text interfering with the ability of the viewer to enjoy the video and creating distractions that take away from the underlying message.
Video transcription services can be used to create subtitles which can be easily added to YouTube video marketing materials in as many different languages as someone would like to use. So what does any of that have to do with the impact of closed captioning for SEO?
The most common file types for video closed captions created from video transcription or translations, is either srt files or txt files. Both of these file types will be fully indexed by the search engines. Not only will your video rank more highly for additional keywords in the original language, but it will now rank well for numerous keywords in all of the languages included in the video translation.
There is an increasing population of netizens that are just as hungry for the information and solutions that you provide as any domestic audience. In these days as we enter “the new normal”, a simple website translation can provide you with all of the tools that you need to implement a multilingual digital marketing campaign now, before your competition beats you to the proverbial punch.

Description
This plugin provide an input box to filter a specified DOM selector (like .products li or item) and hide those who does not contain the inputed text. User start writing into the input box and the plugin start filtering the DOM elements, hiding those who does not contain filter text.
Filtering can be done with preset words buttons which fill automatically the filter with customized words.
In addition the plugin let you order the filtered element in ascendig or descending order the filtered resulting elements and change the layout (list or grid) of the elements.
The plugin work with a shortcode which let the user customize pratically all the parameters (see Shortcode use section to view a full list).
Customizations of the filter box appearance and the animation parameters can be done from configuration page.
It is possible to integrate the filter into the Woocommerce product page: in this case the customization can be made via configuration page.

This is the minimal user of the shortcode

In this way the plugin display a text box which let the user write a text used to filter the elements specified into filter_selector, which has to be indicated as children of container_selector DOM element.
When user start writing the plugin search into ALL THE CONTENT of the specified DOM elements. When the inputed text is found the element remain visible, otherwise the element will be hidden.
Here is and example of advanced use with all parameters:

filter_type (optional): specify the type of search performed to hide or show elements: can be startWithText, endWithText or containText. Default value: containText.
clear_button (optional): can be yes or no and let you decide if you want to display or not the clear filter button icon. Default: yes
sort_button (optional): can be yes or no and let you decide if you want to display or not the sort button icon. Default: no
layout_button (optional): can be yes or no and let you decide if you want to display or not the layout change button icon. Default: no
layout_type (optional): if layout_button paramenter is set to no, you can specify if the filtering target data are in table layout, if layout_button parameter is set to yes, you can specify the starting layout, choosing betweem list or grid. Default: list.
effect_selector (optional): specify the target element to be filter (hidden or shown). As for filter_selector this must be specified as children of container_selector. If not specified filter_selector will be used.
filter_presets (optional): specify the preset values for the filter (comma separated values). Let the user to click the preset and set the configurated value.
input_disabled (optional): specify if the user can write into the filter box or not. Useful if you want to let the user to user the filter only by filter presets. Default: no
class (optional): class applied to filter input box, for styling purpuoses.
placeholder text: the text displayed as placeholder of the filter input box
To create two filter input boxes that can filter the same data (something like “name” and “surname” filter) you can use the filter_group parameters.

The animation parameters can be customized from the configuration page. The plugin provide a shortcode generator button into TinyMCE content editor.
Woocommerce integration
To enable the filter input box into Woocommerce product page you have to go to the WordPress WP Live Contet Filter configuration page and set to yes the Enable integration flag.
This will enable the customization option into the configurationa page too.
In Woocommerce It will not be possible to display the sort button due to the presence of the native sorting options: it will a duplicate!

For example, you could have separate, but very similar, content targeting English speakers in the UK and English speakers in the US.
These tags have a strong influence on Google’s decision as to what content should be served up to international users. How do we know this? Well, there is abundant evidence that the incorrect, or complete absence of, implementation of these little snippets of code can result in the wrong content being displayed in the international SERPs. Given that incorrect implementation of hreflang tags can cause havoc for your international targeting, it’s crucial that you get it right.
HOW TO IDENTIFY IF YOU HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL TARGETING PROBLEM
The first step, of course, is to ascertain whether or not there actually is a problem with your site.
If your Google Analytics dashboard is showing poor traffic or user engagement metrics, then this could be a first indication that something’s up. For a more in-depth analysis, you could look at what countries your visitors are from when analysing the traffic to your geographically targeted content.
In order to confirm whether or not your site’s hreflang implementation (or lack of) is the culprit, it’s definitely worth checking in Google Search Console to see if any issues have been flagged. If Google have detected a problem, you are likely to receive the following error message:
While this is useful to make you aware of any issues, it is certainly not advisable to rely on this exclusively – the list of errors that Google provide here will by no means be exhaustive. It really is up to you to do the digging to identify the full extent of the problem (more on how to do this below).
Finally, in order to gain a really clear perspective on exactly how your site is behaving in the international SERPs, you can use an international proxy in combination with changing the language settings in your browser. In this way, you can carry out a search for your brand terms and identify exactly what content from your site is being displayed for a range of locations and languages. For example, you could identify the content that’s served up to French speakers in France, as well as English speakers in France – be aware that this may not be the same content!
GATHERING THE DATA
Once you’ve identified that you’ve got a problem with your international targeting, getting to the root of the issue will require some nifty tools, mind-bending data manipulation and a bit of good old detective work. Essentially, however, the problem shouldn’t be too difficult to resolve – there are only a handful of ways that things could have gone wrong, and once you’ve spotted the issues they shouldn’t be too difficult to fix.
Very fortunately for us SEOs, the Screaming Frog tool has a neat custom extraction feature that allows us to collect the hreflang data for all URLs on a site. All you need to do is go to Configuration > Custom > Extraction and then fill out the form using the following Xpaths:

You can extract up to 10 hreflang elements at a time using this format (see image below). Make sure that you select ‘Extract HTML Element’ – this will ensure that the entire HTML element is extracted, along with the link and the hreflang value. In addition, don’t forget to opt to crawl subdomains if some of your language- or location-specific content resides on subdomains instead of in subfolders.
After you’ve run the crawl, simply download the custom report and you’re ready to start digging through the data.
ARE YOUR HREFLANG TAGS RECIPROCAL?
A key problem to look out for with hreflang implementation is a lack of reciprocity between tags. Pages must link to each other. For example, if page A says that page B is its equivalent, page B must also refer back to page A in the same way. These mistakes are easy to overlook but crucial to fix.
Once you’ve downloaded the report from Screaming Frog, this is where the real fun begins. You will find that the extracted hreflang elements are listed in columns in the spreadsheet according to whether they were the first, second, third (etc) hreflang element extracted from the page. In this way, you could have a mixture of different language and location tags located in each of the columns.
What you actually want is for the tags to be arranged in columns according to the tag contents. For example, all fr-fr tags are to be located in one column, all en-gb tags to be located in another column etc. This will require some filtering, sorting, cutting and pasting. In addition, you only want the linked URL to be specified here, not the entire hreflang tag – you can use ‘find & replace’ to remove the rest of the html element. For example:
In a new tab in the spreadsheet, you now want to utilise this data that you have so neatly arranged in order to clearly visualise which pages are missing the appropriate hreflang tags and – more crucially – instances where pages are not reciprocal. Using some VLOOKUP, IFERROR and EXACT functions you want to draw this data into a new sheet to create something that resembles the following:
In this set-up, you have each URL on the site located in the far left column. Then, for each language or country variation, a column that specifies which URL is linked to from the necessary hreflang tag on that page. In addition, another column indicates the connection in reverse. A third column clearly states whether these URLs are reciprocal.
Now you can clearly see which tags are reciprocating and which URLs are lacking hreflang tags altogether.
ARE YOU INCORRECTLY USING THE “X-DEFAULT” TAG?
Another mistake that can cause issues is the overuse of the ‘x-default’ tag. This tag is used to specify that a page is not targeted to any specific language or location.
For example, you would implement the following piece of code
on an international landing page that requests for users to choose their country or location from a drop-down menu.
The ‘x-default’ tag is not to be used to refer to URLs which are also associated with specific language or country selectors. For example, the following code would be incorrect:
These tags are contradictory and provide conflicting information to Google; the former tag is indicating that the content is targeted to English speakers in the UK, while the second tag is saying that the content is not targeted at all.
HAVE YOU UPDATED GOOGLE SEARCH CONSOLE?
In addition to hreflang tags, another way to indicate your target audience to Google is to update the international targeting settings in Search Console. In order to be able to do this correctly, you will need to ensure that you have a profile associated with each country-language subfolder (or subdomain). For example, you would want a profile for https://example.com/uk/ and a profile for https://example.com/france/ – in this way you can target each subfolder to a specific country. In order to do so, simply go to the ‘Search Traffic’ dropdown and select ‘International Targeting’ in the Google Search Console profile. From here you can then select the country that you wish to target for that section of the site.
OTHER COMMON ERRORS
Listed below are another couple of common errors that can trip up webmasters and SEOs in their quest to correctly target their content:
Are your language codes correct?
An easy mistake to make, but a mistake nonetheless – these finicky little codes could have you targeting your content to users in Georgia (GE) as opposed to Germany (DE). A useful way to make sure that your codes are correct is to use this hreflang tags generator tool.
Have you tried to target just a region, but not a language too?
While it’s possible to use hreflang tags simply to target speakers of a particular language (for example,signals that the content at this URL is targeted to all English speakers, independent of location), it is not possible to specify a country code by itself.

Small-business victims were involved in 43 percent of data breaches over the course of a year, according to a recent report.

It was March 2, 2016, and Melissa Marchand’s day on Cape Cod started out like any other. She drove to her job at Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises in her mid-size sedan, picked up a latte with 1 percent milk at her local coffee shop and sat down at her desk to check her email. Then, Marchand got the call no website manager ever wants to receive: The site was down, and no one knew how to fix it.
After she dialed up the web hosting provider, the news went from bad to worse: Whales.net had been hacked and, to her horror, all visitors were being redirected to porn sites. Google had even flagged the company’s search results, warning potential customers that the site may be hacked.
“It was a total nightmare — I had no idea that something like this could happen,” Marchand said in an interview with Entrepreneur. “I’d say 75 to 80 percent of our bookings are done online, so when our site is down, we’re just dead in the water.”
At the provider’s suggestion, Marchand called SiteLock, a website security company, and granted its representatives site access. SiteLock discovered the hackers had exploited a security hole in a WordPress plugin, which gave them the access they needed to redirect visitors to racy websites.
By the end of the work day, Marchand sat in her car in her gym’s parking lot, speaking on the phone with a SiteLock representative to review the plan of action. She finally felt like things were going to be OK.
Within three days, Whales.net was back up and running, though it took another three weeks for Google to remove the blacklist warning from the company’s search results.
The hack hit about a month before the whale-watching season began in mid-April, and though it wasn’t peak season, the company still missed out on pre-booking tour groups from schools and camps. Marchand estimated the attack lost the company about 10 percent of its March and April business.
A risk for small businesses everywhere
Small-business owners were victims in 43 percent of data breaches tracked between Nov. 1, 2017, and Oct. 31, 2018, according to a 2019 Verizon report. The report tracked security incidents across all industries, but the most vulnerable sectors this year were retail, accommodation and healthcare.
What does the issue look like on a national scale? If we take the sample size of infected sites SiteLock said they found in 2018 — approximately 47,244 out of 6,056,969 checked — and apply that percentage to the country’s estimated 30.2 million small-businesses websites, minus the estimated 36 percent that don’t have one, then we can loosely estimate the amount of infected small-business websites to be around 150,757.
As a small-business owner, you may not believe anyone would target your website, but that’s just it — bad actors are likely not seeking out your site specifically, said Mark Risher, head of account security at Google.
“Sometimes, we talk about the distinction between targets of choice and targets of chance,” Risher said. “Targets of chance is when the attacker is just trying anything — they’re walking through the parking lot seeing if any of the car doors unlocked. Target of choice is when they’ve zeroed in on that one shiny, flashy car, and that’s the one they want to break into — and they’ll try the windows, the doors … the moon roof. I think for small businesses, there’s this temptation to assume, ‘No one would ever choose me; therefore I’ll just kind of skate by anonymously.’ But the problem is they’re not factoring in the degree of automation that attackers are using.”
Even the least-trafficked websites still average 62 attacks per day, according to SiteLock research. “These cybercriminals are really running businesses now,” said Neill Feather, president of the company. “With the increasing ease of automation of attacks, it’s just as lucrative to compromise a 1,000 small websites as it is to invest your time and try to compromise one large one.”
John Loveland, a cybersecurity head at Verizon and one of the data breach report’s authors, said that since the report was first published 12 years ago, he’s seen a definite uptick in attacks at small and medium-sized businesses. As malware, phishing and other attacks have become “more commoditized and more readily accessible to lesser-skilled hackers,” he said, “you see the aperture open … for types of targets that could be valuable.”
So what are the hackers getting out of the deal? It’s not just about potentially lucrative customer information and transaction histories. There’s also the opportunity to weaponize your website’s reputation. By hosting malware on a formerly trustworthy website, a hacker can increase an attack’s spread — and amplify the consequences — by boosting the malware’s search engine optimization (SEO). They can infect site visitors who search for the site organically or who access it via links from newsletters, articles or other businesses, Risher said.
Even if you outsource aspects of your business — say, time and expense reporting, human resources, customer data storage or financial transactions — there’s still no guarantee that that information is safe when your own website is compromised. Loveland said he saw an uptick in email phishing specifically designed to capture user credentials for web-based email accounts, online CRM tools and other platforms — and reports of credential compromise have increased 280 percent since 2016, according to an annual survey from software company Proofpoint.
How to protect yourself and your customers
How can small-business owners protect themselves — and their customers? Since a great deal of cyberattacks can be attributed to automation, putting basic protections in place against phishing, malware and more can help your site stay off the path of least resistance.
Here are five ways to boost your small-business’s cybersecurity.
1. Use a password manager.
There’s an exhaustive amount of password advice floating around in the ether, but the most important is this, Risher said: Don’t reuse the same password on multiple sites. It’s a difficult rule to stick to for convenience’s sake — especially since 86 percent of internet users report keeping track of their passwords via memorization — but cybersecurity experts recommend password managers as efficient and secure workarounds. Free password manager options include LastPass, Myki and LogMeOnce.
2. Set up email account recovery methods to protect against phishing attacks.
Phishing attacks are an enduring cybersecurity problem for large and small businesses alike: 83 percent of respondents to Proofpoint’s annual phishing survey reported experiencing phishing attacks in 2018, an increase from 76 percent the year before. Embracing a more cyber-aware culture — including staying vigilant about identifying potential phishing attacks, suspicious links and bogus senders — is key to email safety.
If you’re a Gmail user, recent company research suggests that adding a recovery phone number to your account could block up to 100 percent of cyberattacks from automated bots, 99 percent of bulk phishing attacks and 66 percent of targeted attacks. It’s helpful because in the event of an unknown or suspicious sign-in, your phone will receive either an SMS code or an on-device prompt for verification. Without a recovery phone number, Google will rely on weaker challenges such as recalling last sign-in location — and while that still stops most automated attacks, effectiveness against phishing drops to 10 percent.
3. Back up your data to protect against ransomware.
Ransomware — a cyberattack in which a hacker holds your computer access and/or data for ransom — has kicked off a “frenzy of cybercrime-related activities focused on small and medium businesses,” Loveland said. In fact, it’s the second leading malware action variety in 2019, according to the Verizon report, and accounted for 24 percent of security incidents. Hackers generally view it as a potentially low-risk, high-reward option, so it’s important to have protections in place for such an attack — namely, have your data backed up in its entirety so that you aren’t at the hacker’s mercy. Tools such as Google Drive and Dropbox can help, as well as automatic backup programs such as Code42 (all charge a monthly fee). You can also purchase a high-storage external hard drive to back everything up yourself.
4. Enlist a dedicated DNS security tool to block suspicious sites.
Since computers can only communicate using numbers, the Domain Name System (DNS) is part of the internet’s foundation in that it acts as a “translator” between a domain name you enter and a resulting IP address. DNS wasn’t originally designed with top-level security in mind, so using a DNSSEC (DNS Security Extension) can help protect against suspicious websites and redirects resulting from malware, phishing attacks and more. The tools verify the validity of a site multiple times during your domain lookup process. And though internet service providers generally provide some level of DNS security, experts say using a dedicated DNSSEC tool is more effective — and free options include OpenDNS and Quad9 DNS. “[It’s] a low-cost, no-brainer move that can prevent folks from going to bad IP addresses,” Loveland said.
5. Consider signing up with a website security company.
Paying a monthly subscription to a website security company may not be ideal, but it could end up paying for itself in terms of lost business due to a site hack. Decreasing attack vulnerability means installing security patches and updates for all of your online tools as promptly as possible, which can be tough for a small-business owner’s schedule.
“It’s tempting for a small-business owner to say, ‘I’m pretty handy — I can do this myself,’” Risher said. “But the reality is that even if you’re very technical, you might not be working around the clock, and … you’re taking on 24/7 maintenance and monitoring. It’s certainly money well spent to have a large organization doing this for you.”
